What type of filter cartridge?

Need to replace the filter cartridge that was removed for winterization last fall. It's our first spring in the TT, and I'm trying to figure out what we need. I'm told that 'any standard 10" filter will do," but I note that there seems to be an incredible range of what you might pay for these (from under $10 to over $40). I know nothing about this and don't know what I should be getting. Any input would be welcome.

Good service - I recently bought a stainless Watts 263A pressure regulator with gauge from him.

I purchased my filters and regulator from him. I spoke to him on the phone at length numerous times. He was always patient and explained everything in detail. They will steer you in the right direction.
  • Shop the online filter suppliers. I pay about $1.50 each for 1 micron primary 10" filters and $5.00 each for the .5 micron 10" charcoal filters. I ran this combo on our RV and run it on our house in front of the water softener. The primary filters are changed monthly on the house and the secondary filters every other month on the house. We average right at 105 gallons/day. You do the math and you will be able to figure the life on your RV. On our RV I removed the filters when we returned from a trip and installed the new ones just prior to departure.

  • for increased flow rate, I used two of those inline filters in parallel. also works for those el cheapo pressure regulators that seriously cut down on flow.

  • Here's my experience with my whole-house filter system in my Fifth Wheel. I fought with water pressure constantly especially when boondocking and the water pump behind it. I ended up abandoning it, and installing a drinking water system in the main kitchen area to service our filtering needs.. Much happier with this and the sureflo water pump can pump water through it too..

  • Depends upon what and how much you want to filter...
Some only filter sediment and chlorine taste. Others go much deeper into really bad stuff that might be in the water..

Flow rate is also a consideration. Generally the more they filter, the more they restrict flow. It's a balancing act.

Recently I have been using this with good results: ..Hydro Life #2471 #5
  • That wide range in price, is because there is a wide range in effectiveness of the filters, as well as what they will filter out of the water. If you are only trying to get rid of the dirt, those are fairly inexpensive. But the Odor and Taste filters (with carbon) are more expensive.

Personally, we just get one of the "in-line" hose filters each Spring, and attach that to the water hose going to the RV.
  • I buy the 5 micron filters for the one installed in the MH from Amazon. I buy a charcol filter for the one I mount on the hose outside the MH.

  • Probably should get a cartridge that matches the flow rate on the original one. Also I would pay attention to the micron size which effects how EFFECTIVE it does in filtering your water.
