what's the best way to repair small tear in awning?

I've used awning tape to cover a small hole and it worked. But in this case, I'd find a good shop that repairs awnings, boat seats, etc. I don't think it would cost that much and they could make a proper repair i.e. stitch it up so that it will be repaired for the long haul.
