When to Shut the Fridge Off

Mine gets shut off when done for the year. The short time you are at the places you listed does not make that much difference. Would you turn the frig off if you were stopped in traffic on a hill?

We fulltime and unless we go away from the rig for a week or so, we don't shut it off. We did have an ARP unit installed. If the rig sits unlevel for a time, the boiler will start to overheat and the ARP unit will shut it down temporarily, then start it back up. According to Leon at National Refrigeration the ARP unit does this the most when you are driving and going up/down hills.

Why not have the ARP unit installed and then leave it on and don't worry about it.

for the placesyou listed ,I would only shut off for fueling ,the rest doesn,t help. and if its going to sit not used for a week.

Three travel trailers with gas/electric refrigerators and kept all three in the "auto" position all the time and "on." Never turned them off, except when the camper was shut down for the winter and the outside temperatures was colder than the inside temperature of the freezer.

Now, I have an all electric residential refrigerator and it's never been turned off, except ... when I forgot to turn on the inverter when traveling. oops! Done that a few times. Once at our destination and plugged into electricity, I shut the inverter off.

All our campers were always parked at home and we kept the refrigerators going for additional refrigerator and freezer space. It comes in REAL handy around the holidays!

FYI, now that I have an all electric residential refrigerator, there's no more controversy over turning refrigerators off when refueling, ... which I never did. Only a couple times did I actually turn the tanks off, and that was when traveling through some tunnels that ran underwater.

We don't have space at home, so it's a pretty simple equation for us... If it's in the storage lot, it's off. If it's with us, it's on! Even when loading at home the night before a trip, at which point it is not sitting level, I run it with no issues.

"RV Fridges of old" had to level....no if, ands, buts, or discussions about it. If you didn't have it darned level and ran it for 20 minutes, it would lock up and you'd have to pull the fridge out and turn it upside down for 24 hrs. The new fridges that we are currently enjoying aren't nearly as temperamental as those old geezers of yesteryear. I worked for many years in an RV repair shop and must have pull out a hundred fridges and flopped them on their head......including one I was using when we went to Grass Valley CA. camping! I should have known! In my current rig, I seldom turn it off when we park to go in a grocery stores or stuff like that. If it is visually off level I just flip the switch. So easy now days!

Mine is in AUTO from the time we leave home til the time we return, whether 3 days or 3 weeks. 12 years old and still works fine.

Yes, I do think you're wasting lots of time for nothing.

Mine is OFF only when in storage, between trips. Going on 10 years of RVing.

My new RV has the new MorRyde stairs and it's a pain to open for a minute or two...

You have more important things to worry about, trust me.

You'll develop ulcers soon if you keep it up...
