Which aux water tank?

For those of you hauling extra water around in the truck bed, what kind of tank are you using?

I've been looking at Plastic Mart and they have so many choices on the website for potable tanks.

I think I'd like to haul an extra 30 gallons, without having to divide it into 5 gallon jugs. I have a 12v transfer pump already, so moving water from the truck to the trailer won't be difficult.

Bag/bladder tanks seem just as expensive as solid wall tanks - I guess you're paying for the ability to roll it up and store it away when empty?

It's getting closer to spring, so I popped by TSC and bought the one two sizes up from the above tank... the 65 gallon "leg tank"

Fits real nice at the front of the bed where my toolbox used to sit. Need to work out a hold down method, as well as the plumbing. Ordered a 12v 5gpm transfer pump from Jeff's website, plan to wire it up to one of the in-cab aux control switches.

I will post up some pictures when I'm back on solid Internet, hardly enough for email where I'm staying right now.

mbopp: Where did you score those barrels, the price is certainly right?! They look like they're from the food service industry? Once in a blue moon our local surplus warehouse has blue 50 gallon food service barrels from a company that makes pickles. I don't know if I'd ever be able to get the pickle smell out of the plastic - it's very strong when you open the barrel even though they claim to have pressure washed them.

The 15g fresh water barrel was new from a container shop (Kaplan Container in Rochester.) The 30g one came from a surplus store, it was used for detergent.
    Kaplan's price on a new 30g drum is $60, the 15g one is $24.
  • My trailer is rated 20 gallons, but they count the 5 gallon hot water heater, so I have a 15 gallon fresh tank. I have 50 gallons of waste storage (30 gray, 20 black).

Dutchmen: I like the looks of that TSC "leg tank"... I'll stop by TSC and have a gander maybe this weekend. Too cold for hauling extra water right now, but I can dream of spring :)

  • My trailer has a 50 gallon tank which I currently supplement with two 6 gallon jugs. I will be switching to the bladder variety one of these days. As you pointed out, it can be rolled up and stored out of the way, not to mention you can get them with very large capacity.

Too bad :( ... I've been using 7 gal Aquatainers for this purpose for years - inexpensive, tough, made of food grade plastic, cube shaped for easy storage, weigh nothing when empty and just 60 lbs when full, screw on main cap and screw on vent cap so they don't leak - what more could one ask for? :W With a 30 gal FW holding tank on my trailer I carry four 'Tainers in my Avalanche so I can take extra water with me if necessary and always gather even more while we're camping. A 12 vdc potable water pump transfer water effortlessly from the 'Tainers to the trailer's FW holding tank. :B

When we're not camping the 'Tainers hang on the wall in my garage ... where you going to store a 30 gal tank? :@
