Must be some reason to do 30a, because people set up for that, but I can't figure out why. Maybe I am missing a trick?

If for no other reason, the 30 amp plug is a much more reliable connection than a standard wall plug. 15a, 30a, 50a is all 120V, just a matter of wiring and the cost difference between running a new 15a line or a new 30a line is minimal.
