It's difficult to understand the need to heat a cup of water on MW when gas range does this faster :).
If this is something that needs warming but not boiling, and you can't or don't want to watch it, then there are double-wall boilers and milk warmers for gas range, you can find them on Amazon for $15-40. They'll make it hot but not boiling. Works for warming up meals as well, faster than using an oven.
For very accurate temperature control like the above mentioned baby bottle at 2 am, MW is better, but for most other things you can do without it.
