Only time 12v would be considered would be during a long drive and even then I recommend propane.

If the refrigerator works OK on 120V when plugged in, I'd definitely check out the gas side. Most absorption refrigerators work best on propane. Be sure the chimney is clean, the flame looks correct and the orifice doesn't have something blocking it, etc.
