If it works well on electric I would do 3 things, first vacuum out all the rust flakes that fall down into the burner tube. If you see no improvement check/clean your flu, is your spiral baffle inside your flu clogged with soot or is it completely rusted away. Lastly clean the orifice. How old is the refer? Have you ever cleaned the burner tube, flu or orifice in the past?
