First, SJOW is adequate (SOOW is for over 600V).
Second, I don't understand wiring L1 to L2. That sounds like a dead short to me !
Personally, I would purchase a inverter/charger/automatic transfer switch. You can delete your converter. The inverter will only over ONE leg of the 50A 240V power source so choose wisely.
