sounds like your inverter's charging settings have never been set up properly. it may need a custom charging profile set up as per the manual. there are a lot of settings that need to be set to your particular application. time to study the manual or get someone to help set it up with you so you know how it should work. yes i would put a switch on the ac power to the original converter charger to normally have it off.
