Had to renew the registration on my Dually yesterday. So I asked some questions. The nice young lady at the counter couldn't answer them so she went in the back and brought out a guy that was very sharp and extreamly helpful. Below is the readers digest condensed version.
What is my legal hauling weight for my truck?
Your current registration is for 12K gross laden weight combined.
What is the highest I can register for?
How ever much you want to pay for up to 80K. Then you get into overweight permits.
On a 1 ton pickup???
I didn't say it would be smart on your part, and there may be other laws you would be breaking if you did in fact load up to a 80K gross with this truck (ie: tire ratings, axle ratings etc.). But your registered weight would be ok!
You mean the GVWR number ratings on the door pillar?
No, thats just what the MFG. will stand behind for warranty etc. Your rear axle should have a tag on it from the MFG that states what it is rated for. And your tires will have a rating.
So when you say MFG on the axle your talking about the company that supplied the axle to Dodge, not what Dodge says on the door pannel for GAWR for the axle?
That is correct. Yours is probably in the 10,000 to 11,000lb area? It will be slightly higher than what your tires are rated for. Don't know for sure thought....Thats why the axle is taged. If the tag is missing you can look it up on the MFG website. I believe your Dodge has AAM axles under it.
If it helps any? Here's what you can expect if pulled over by a weights and measures officer if they feel you might be overweight. I am going to assume you don't have a CDL and that your registered weight is under 26,001 lbs to keep it in the relm of what I think you are trying to make sure you comply with for a personal use vehicle/RV application..
First ~ look at your registered weight. If you appear to be close to that or heavier than that number you will get weighed.
Second ~ look at the ratings of the tires. Check your axle weight is under the ratings on the sidewall of the tires. If you are good there they will continue on to ensure your gross combined weight is under what your registered for. If your under that you will be on your way. If your over on any single axle, tires or registered. Depending on how much and where your over you may or may not be cited. And you may or may not be able to continue on your journey. Thats totally dependent on the officer in some issues and very well spelled out for him on other issues.
Thank you very much. I would like to renew my registration for 18,000 Gross Laden Weight.
This young lady can handle that. Have a good day.
