Buying any 1-1/4 or 1-1/2 Ton for personal use (non-commercial) and asking for non-commercial discounts is challenging. Ford offers a “derated” certification if ordered from the factory as such. It’s order code 68D, which lowers the GVRW without any derating modifications actually done to the truck. This rating is recorded and permanently tied to the VIN. Insurance companies, DMV, etc can look up the VIN and see the derated certification, which allows users to classify the rig as personal use only and get out of some commercial rig requirements. Most insurance companies have a process to allow these types of rigs to qualify for the much less exspensive personal truck insurance, but this must be explained up front since most insurers automatically rate anything over 14K capacity as “commercial”. The only problem with a derated VIN is that it can limit resell to non-commercial buyers, since any business buyer cannot legally use the rig for commercial purposes.
I’d be interested to hear if/how that actually works for personal insurance. Since the F450/550 and Ram 4500 derates are only dropping the rated gvw a little bit, but keeping them still in the class 4-5 weight categories.
Guessing it doesnt help since a derated F550 is still rated at 17-18klbs gvw.
