The old 4 speed transmission in the pre 2003 Ram (Dodge) models could be troublesome. I think they were OK on the gas motors but the diesels (especially ones that were chipped) could damage them. This is coming from a friend who worked at the local Chrysler/Dodge dealer for many years.
The 5-6 speed transmissions are pretty much bullet proof and have been for many years. Sure there are failures with any brand transmission but I believe the transmissions from both Ford and Chrysler are very good now.
