Common rail has not hurt diesels, made them better quieter and more powerful.
Just wait till you get a new one and get it up around 100,000 miles. You'll really begin to notice the price of electronic injectors. With power comes a price and a huge trade off in this case with a fuel system 3 times more likely to completely ruin an engine over that of on a well timed mechanical injection pump.
I see that you have a truck in your avatar that is a second gen dodge. If it is the 24 valve Cummins... that injection pump is the easiest one to change and with two stroke oil in the fuel, will last 250 k and beyond. New injectors for it are 400 bucks, but new the Common Rail electronic injectors up to $4800 bucks and less reliable.
