07 6.0 vs 08 V10 tow report

Took a trip with my new to me 2007 F250 6.0 this weekend. Drove the same route that I had with the V10 many times. While the V10 did seem more stable, even with a lift, the 6.0 did well and it was windy. I definitely need to upgrade to the 08 tow mirrors, the 07 ones are dinky! The big thing, the main reason that I got a diesel, the mileage. All of this was hand calculated, so I know it's reasonably accurate. With the V10, I would get at best 4.5 mpg's towing the trailer. With the 6.0, I got an honest 10.5 mpg towing that included stop and start traffic and what we Floridians call hills. Broken down, it is cheaper for me to tow with the diesel and pay the slightly higher fuel cost. And please, don't bore me with all the 6.0 hate, I'm working on the known problems slowly but surely. Just wanted to give an honest report on the difference in mileage between the two engines.
  • 4.5 mpg towing something was wrong there! My V-10 gets 7 towing when i had the 285's with the 265 and a hwy tread i can get near 8.
  • My 99 v10 mh was 20000lbs and pulled my Chevy Colorado and got 6 to 7.
  • My V-10 has always provided better mileage loaded than that. It seems abnormally low

Exact same numbers for me, wether pulling a 30' trailer or my former 41' weekend warrior (probably helped the WW had a nice curved front cap). And that includes Oregon hills. That can mean 7% climbs for miles.

There are no number of miles where the fuel economy savings on a 6.0 would ever pay for the upgrades required to make it acceptably reliable to me, once the extra fuel cost (around here) is factored in.

Were you lifted and running 37's? Before lift, I would average about 5.5-6 with a lighter trailer.

  • That is good to know. I've wondered what the difference was between the gasser and diesel. Yes, the V10 has a lot less torque, but what matters is what comes out at the wheels.

10.5 MPG in traffic is pretty amazing, and to boot, you don't have to buy DEF that is another fuel charge.
