As a kid I remember cabovers everywhere; my Dad had a Mack cabover and of course one very popular orange-and-white Kenworth COE appeared on our TVs every week (BJ & the Bear).
I wonder why they faded so much in popularity? Maybe length laws changed.
I think part of the reason for their demise here in the US was safety. Cabovers are death traps in any kind of head-on or left front quarter collision, as well as roll-overs. This was illustrated to me in gory detail when I first visited an all-semi junk yard as a kid. The cabovers were so crushed there was no way the driver could possibly have lived in alot of them. There was still blood on the interiors as a testament to the horror of what happened inside those cabs.
It made me break down and cry.
The conventionals, by stark contrast, had much more intact driver areas and likely the drivers lived through it to go home to their families.
I quickly changed my distaste for conventionals after that memorable visit to the junk yard so may years ago....
