Agreed Length laws killed them off in the US. They kept developing in Europe.

Here it is Conventionals, many older drivers die driving them. I would say Truck safety in Europe has taken a quantum leap. the COE's you are talking about were death traps. So were 1970's cars, with bench seats , no crumple zones, no seatbelts etc.
