This is the OP. As i have been fortunate enough to drive all of the latest generation of gas truck from all 3 Mfrs I will offer my “seat of the pants” impressions.
these are all HD trucks, dealers are all adjacent so test drive was on same stretch of road.
Ram 6.4l 8 speed
Nice truck. Engine spooled up quickly-you might even say raucous/vocal, shifts were seamless and very smooth under acceleration. Tow/haul mode was imperceptible (unladen). Ride was a bit jittery/bouncy. Overall this truck was probably the “nicest” experience, very smooth powertrain-car like.
Ford 6.2l 10 speed.
Also nice truck, engine spooled up quickly shifts were quick up to highway speed. There were aa couple of “thuds” when down shifting, particularly in T/H mode. They were noticeable. Don’t know if it was this particular truck, if it were mine i would be having the shop check it out. The various drive modes are very interesting; normal/ tow haul, eco, etc...how these play out in real world remains to be seen. Ride at highway speed was composed.
GM 6.6L 6 speed
i have been in GM trucks for 30 years, but honestly i did not have high hopes for this powertrain as on paper it already looks dated. However i was pleasantly surprised. Acceleration was on par with the others, shifts were smooth. Downs shifts in tow/haul were with authority- more solid than the other two. Ride was typical GM (IFS) smooth.
Keep in mind i have been driving diesel for 15 years, the power of these gas engine trucks was certainly acceptable for what i will need to do. Quite honestly they are all nice trucks and there is VERY little difference in the power trains. Splitting hairs really.
i am going into this new truck with an open mind. I could drive any of them. So what’s next?
i really want to see mpg numbers for the ford 10 speed and ram 8 speed. Nothing out there yet.
i still need to drive the new ford 7.3l. None around here yet. And i need to see mpg numbers for this powertrain also.
I will likely need to order a truck to get what i am looking for; 1 ton, SRW, gas, lb, cc.
i will build each and submit RFQ’s and see what the best value is. The powertrains we have available today are all incredible.
