You are fortunate to have all the dealers nearby. When I was truck shopping, I could not find much more than Ford dealers around.
Coming to new technology, it is amazing. Recently I bought biggest Sprinter van powered by 4-cylinder diesel.
Not only great mpg, but the small engine pulled 17 miles Baker, CA grade on top 7th gear 1/2 way up till it downshifted at 70 mph.
Here goes the old "bigger is better". As of today, even the smallest engine is more than average user needs.
On used Sprinter market, the 4-cylinders gain about $4000 better resale value than their 6-cylinders siblings.
