Higher octane allows you to run greater timing advance and higher cylinder pressures and temperatures without pre detonation or ignition. If the engine is not adjusted to take advantage of the higher octane, you get no performance benefit from running it. Since the ignition point is raised with this fuel, you may actually get worse fuel burn in an unoptimized engine resulting in poorer overall performance.
