Ethanol fuel contains less BTU's of energy than pure gasoline. Some of the difference can be made by being less susceptible to preignition and increasing the compression, and/or timing.
Bottom line, octane rating side by side, alcohol in fuels decreases mpg.
WRT top fuel dragsters, they burn 10-20 gallons per quarter mile :)
