Silicone lasts a very long time. The trouble with it is, its adhesion to things varies from a few days or weeks to just about completely unremovable for all of time. It's adhesive strength is very modest in the world of adhesive/sealants. These are some of the many reasons it isn't used to seal anything on a boat deck.
Some manufactures of hardware or bath appliances and accessories specify it, because it is easier to put on without a mess, and some other sealants will attack some plastics.
The best sealant for the exterior of an RV is a polyurethane or polyether, like the 3M and Sika products. There is an attitude in the RV world that you just have to reseal things every year, like scheduled maintenance. Done properly with proper materials, this can easily be every 20 years instead.
