There's no reason not to get the 2500 over the 1500. All else being equal between the trucks (brand, year, cab configuration, etc.) The 2500 will have a stronger: frame, axles, engine, transmission, drive shafts, U-joints, etc. It will have bigger brakes, heavier rated tires, and the ability to haul more and tow more. Even when hauling or towing equal weight the 2500 truck will be less stressed, ride better, handle better, and probably last longer in this type of service.
All the controls are the same, the body is basically the same, the interior is the same, etc.
As for why not a 4, 5, or 6 series truck? That gets you into insurance, licensing, and clearance issues. There is really no reason for anyone using a truck like a truck to not simply get a 3500 SRW truck. That's where I'm at in life. I have no use for anything 1500. Even when I bought my Suburban I went straight for the 2500 series. It does a great job hauling 7 people and a 7,000 pound boat over the mountains.
