What is the tow capacity of the lighter truck? Ideally it will be at least 20% higher than the gross weight of the trailer (forget dry weight). You could probably 'get by' but is it worth the hassle? We started out with a truck that according to the specs would do the job but two trips into the mountains convinced us otherwise.

Yes, you could get by with a Chevy 5.3. You could get by a little better with a Ford 3.5l eco-boost. A gas 3/4 ton would be even better. If you think you might one day get a bigger truck. Get the 3/4ton. Diesel if you really think you will go big one day, if you go diesel, go ahead and get a one ton.
