Apparently most of the truck manufacturers are building their trucks to meet the SAE J2707 standard, so even the 1/2 tons should have adequate brakes to handle their quoted towing capacities provided you equip it properly.
My current truck is a 2006 Toyota Tundra 4x4 Access cab with 59,000 miles on it. It's been garaged and in great shape. Nothing has ever gone wrong with it....nothing. My wife and I like to fix up old run down homes so the truck has come in in very handy. We don't flip, we buy them, live in them and fix them up. After a few years we get bored and do it all over again, we've moved about 6 times over the years. Now its time to tour the country.
I also agree that no one ever said "I bought too much truck!" because they probably ran out of money first! I can not believe how expensive trucks are. I've been looking at used ones as well as new. Most of the used 1/2 tons are coming off lease and aren't equipped to tow much and the used 3/4 tons I've seen thus far were used heavy.
