We went from a pop-up towing with a Chevy Lumina Mini Van, to a Surburban 1500 towing our first 18 foot travel trailer. The trailer was under 6000 pounds and within 3 months the transmission in the Suburban was destroyed. We got a rebuilt transmission installed and then it towed horrible.
We were faced with a decision, what kind of tow vehicle should we get. Thinking ahead to our future, we had no clue where our towing needs would eventually lead us, so we decided let's get the the biggest baddest boy we could find. We ended up getting a gasser 3500 Chevy Silverado dully used. And for towing that 6000 pound trailer, it was a marvelous beast.
Then on day, my Chevy dealership repair shop informed me my frame was actually breaking apart into 2 and advised I never tow anything again. Problem solved, we got our first diesel 3500 Chevy Silverado dully and what a difference! It was a towing beast for sure. That opened the doors wide for us to eventually get any size or kind of trailer in the future.
Eventually we traded that second 3500 for a brand new 3500 diesel Chevy Silverado. By now we were on our 3rd trailer, which was a 35 footer. The new truck gave us even more options. We knew we could tow absolutely anything, and eventually "anything" really became something!
We didn't have to buy another truck again, we were already all set up, and 2 week ago we purchased our first 5er at 41 feet long!
I suppose what I rambling about and suggesting here is to think ahead a few years from now. More than likely your RV needs will change. You will eventually be getting a new camper, if you really end up enjoying this life style. You will no doubt want something bigger, maybe even that fifth wheel.
If you get the larger and heftier tow vehicle NOW, it gives you more options for a different trailer, if that be travel trailer, fifth wheel, hybrid trailer or toy hauler model -- trailer or 5er. Getting the "larger than really needed at this very moment" tow vehicle will save you a lot of frustration in the future. Plus, as stated above you can never have too much truck when it comes to towing!
My suggestion??? Get the biggest, baddest, most robust truck you can reasonably afford now, and you'll have no regrets in the future.
