One of the big problems with saying a 1/2 ton is fine...the capability varies wildly depending on how they are optioned.
Yes, one that is optioned for max payload/towing will handle a 7500lb trailer but one optioned as a grocery getter may struggle with 5500lb.
Once you jump up to 3/4 ton, there is variation but even the lower ranges should handle 7500lb trailer no problem. Plus as mentioned, bigger brakes, axles, etc...
