With a properly weighed and set up wdh, a half ton can handle a 7500lb trailer without much issue. If You don't know your weights and don't scale the rig to set up the wdh, that's where towing heavy with a half ton can lead to trouble.
I personally love, my 2500 and I came out of a 2015 1500 Silverado to this ram and I have no regrets. But the ride is more harsh, worse fuel mileage, but I don't, mind the ride at all. Everyone is different and there's no right or wrong answer at the weights your talking about. More personal preference. Good luck
