OP... Don't get discouraged. Trucks that meet your needs are out there. I had a half ton F150. Then a dwr F350 crew. Sold it and I am going back to a half ton. With that in mind I know I am limited to a lighter GVWR trailer. I'm ok with that.
Properly equipped, a half ton can pull a lot and carry a lot.
Be careful with the 3/4 ton suggestions.... They are NOT magic band aids for payload. Some of them (several) are within a few hundred lbs on the payload numbers as a half ton. Some are significantly more.
Those saying they don't see half tons towing fivers and TT's are looking through HD colored glasses. I see them EVERY day on my 70 plus mile commute.
Last rig I saw broke down was a HD truck. (Common ford PSD...smoke billowing. Etc. ) Haven't seen a half ton rig broke down in quite a while.
