How do they even determine their ratings? Wouldn't it behoove them to keep them lower, or risk a lot of warranty claims when components don't hold up to the towing?
Well the manufacturers found out a while back that inflating the ratings, especially on 1/2 tons sold a lot of trucks. They kept one upping each other to the point that some 1/2 tons have higher ratings than some 3/4 tons.
As for warranty, they figure that most won't tow often enough to where the components break during the warranty The few that do, they accept as a cost of doing buisiness...
After a while things got so out of control that the manufacturers themselves were looking for a way out.. And thay came up with the new SAE standards. SAE has very specific tests that a truck must pass with a given weight in order to be certified. It is voluntary, but I am pretty sure that they all wanted to do it together. But they all were not ready at the same time and didn't want to take the sales hit that the lower ratings might mean..
It is still supposed to happen at some point.
It does appear that the 3/4- 1 ton ratings have some more validity.
Probably because they all figure that those buyers will likely tow a lot more, some up to 100% of the time, and warranty costs would sky rocket if the ratings were exaggerated
