Once you get used to having that kind of margin it's hard to go back to being right at the limits of your vehicle.
That's the problem I have. In my case towing the exact same rigs with a 2003 HD 2500 and the 2008 F-150 on the same mountain roads and passes, I see no noticeable difference in the two although I have stiffened up the F-150. Payload rating with "P" assenger tires.
I've towed allot and "margin" is nothing but numbers, it is not how the vehicle feels/breaks or drives. I pulled a 40ft mobile home from McCall Idaho down the canyon to Horseshoe bend with a '74 GMC/454/3/4 ton beefed up to tow big and heavy, with a special hitch welded on by a logging truck welder..
Now that felt over weight and i drove accordingly, the trip back uphill was more comfy with the big 454 doing most of the work and not being pushed down hill and around corners...
That's extreme, I know but pulling a 8k trailer with a truck/trailer combo the opp says pulls just fine is a completely different thing. Overweight towing is noticed right of the bat, the minute you drive that first mile, you'll know something isn't right..
Not the case here with the opp... It tows fine after several trips out...... If it ain't broke/there's no reason to fix it!
