13.5 or 15 K BTU AC

I am ordering a new camper with a 26' box. Would it be a good thing to upgrade to the 15K BTU AC? With the camper being as small as it is I am concerned that the 15K unit would cycle to often in Ohio's summers, but would be great when we travel to New Mexico this summer.
  • When ordering a new trailer the 15k option is probably $100-150 more than the 13.5 , I did it on my TT, same size. I plan to pair 2 Honda 2ks to do the job if/when I head south.
  • I had the same choice , I went with the 15k, have not regretted my decision at all, when I don't need a lot of cooling the unit goes into low fan speed, which Is fairly quiet
  • Remember that when you travel down the road the interior of the trailer will become like an oven. Once you set up at a campground and start the A/C; it will take a 13.5 longer to get the temps down than it would if you had a 15K. We had a 28' trailer with a slide and went to Texas once. 4 hours after plugging in we were finally under 85F. The next trailer (bigger) came with 2 15K units.
  • Thanks for the replies. I just emailed my sales person and, using information in your replies, asked if the 15K unit is low profile and if it includes the heat strip/heat pump, and of course how much extra it will be.

    Thanks!

15K is the best choice. If you have a choice between a ceiling unit or a ducted unit go for the ducted one - much better air distribution.
  • If the OP cannot cool a 26' box with a 13.5K unit, he better close the door and windows. We have always been taught that an air conditioner does its best work when running, not when it is short cycling from being oversized for the application.
  • 15k would be my choice. My 13.5k in the unit in my signature (26' box) does OK (one 16' slide, enclosed underbelly) and will keep temps in the 75° range here in the south with normal in and outs from the kids and such. Would love to make use of the extra capacity of the the 15k unit.
  • If it has a large slide, you'll want 2 a/c's. No slides, a 15k btu should be fine for 100 degree weather and low humidity.
  • Well,,,, I'm going to weigh in here and maybe get myself yelled at. But, I would say it partly depends on which Air Conditioner manufacture you are looking at. It seems some of them do not cool nearly as well as others. But, your salesman is not going to know the difference and tell you that they are all the same.
