You never know what the future will bring. In our case, we purchased 05 2500 Silverado LS with 8.1, Ally, 4.10 ext cab, short bed. We ordered the truck in January 2005, so we could get the options we wanted. Truck case $30,500 out the door (no trade-in, we sold the 1500 to a private party).
In December 2012, we sold the truck for $17,000 (after just short of 8 yrs). We also sold the 5vr to the same couple for 50% of purchased new price.
Rather than be borderline now, IMHO, get the 2013 unless 2014 model have some options/styling/comfort you would prefer - and DON'T LOOK BACK! Enjoy whatever "you two" decide, but 2500 is definitely the way to go!
