Looking around for a 3500. Found a '14 with low miles, but it seems to be a buy back truck from California. Steering issues, dealer could not replicate the problem. What changed from '14 to '15 frame/steering wise if anything?
I would stay away from Ram especially the 2013-15. Specifically the 2014 in question it has had six recalls, and headed for a seventh on the emissions, which also includes the 2013, and 2015.
The emission system on the 2013-15 are very troublesome . Reason for the recall coming. Will it help the problems, we can only hope.
The track bar was not a steering issue unless it came undone because of poor welds, but I think you stated it had the recall on the track bar . Emission problems alone would keep me from a 2014 .
I've heard of minimal issues with the emissions systems on 2013-2015 models. I had one CEL which was cured with a programming update.
Also this "catastrophe" of the recalls is not a reason to avoid one. My dealer promptly took care of them without issue.
I don't know where you have been ,get on a Cummins forum, or talk to some Ram diesel tech's ,and see what they have to say.
First there is a TSB on the emissions, but it has to have a CEL, and code to get it. My last emissions issue they should of done the TSB on it ,instead they cleared the code, and CEL, and sent me on my way. Was told this by my local dealer, they couldn't do anything until I had another issue, so now I just get to wait for the next episode .
When I had this last episode with the " Service DEF System See Dealer, I was out of town. I called the two closest dealers, I was in the countdown mode before going into the limp mode, and had limited miles . Both dealers told me the same thing hope its not the converter they are on backorder. Also they told me they have a steady stream of these trucks with DEF ,and emissions issues. So I repeat where have you been.
I find it a bit humorous , The comments like I only had one CEL or I have had no problems, we are a pretty small group on these forums, and don't come close to representing how many issues are out there.
No this " catastrophe " of recalls six headed to seven on my truck, is not a reason to stay away, but its pretty annoying every few months having to get into a dealer, but these emission problems would give me pause on one of these 2013-15 Ram Cummins especially used. The issues need to be addressed, hopefully the next recall coming on the emissions will correct some of the issues.
No fun going down the freeway, with a mile countdown, fifth wheel in tow, hoping you will make it to the nearest dealer before the limp mode.
No I do not belong to the Ram Mafia on this forum, where its all rosy with these Cummins powered Rams.
I'm certainly not naive enough to say that there are no problems with them, but I don't think the emissions issues are as bad as you are trying to portray. I sympathize with you having issues (and possibly crappy dealers which certainly make the situation much worse), but the fact that you have had issues doesn't make it a widespread problem. What is different on the 2016-2017 models that make them better/more reliable? I'm not being smart; just trying to get some education.
My truck certainly doesn't have high mileage yet, but the mileage it does have is mostly working hard towing a 16k lbs fiver all through the mountain passes of BC, Alberta, Washington, and Oregon. It does this extremely well, gets respectable fuel mileage doing it, and has not given me any trouble as of yet. Hopefully it stays that way and if it doesn't there will be some changes, whether it be another brand or deleting. I came from 20 years of Fords with the last one being a 6.0L so it goes without saying that I am extremely happy with my Ram so far.
Lastly, with all due respect, if you are that concerned with your truck and it's reliability, likely the best thing to do is move on from it. You are in a position where you clearly are not happy with it, don't trust it, and are extremely sour about it. I'm not saying that I blame you but continually posting and trying to make lemonade on an online forum isn't making your truck any more reliable. You will be much happier in the long run. Just my 2 cents worth.
I'm not trying to portray anything, This recall will involve 130,000 Ram pickups, with a cost of 200 million, not hardly something I am trying to portray. It appears to be a faulty SCR ,that has been changed or upgraded on the 2016,17's. It appears the recall will affect the 2013-2015 .
In reality I have had no issues, other then a warning, and CEL. Nothing happened other then HAVING to see a dealer. Here is what happened , got the "Service DEF System See Dealer", with a CEL. After several miles the truck went into a mile countdown to the 5 mph limp mode. At about the 80 mile countdown it just quit counting down, and the stored message just went away. The CEL remained on. Not wanting to take a chance got into the nearest out of town dealer I could. They checked it out, it was a P207F code, bad DEF, checked DEF , the DEF was not bad it was okay, checked DEF nozzle it was okay. Cleared the code, cleared the CEL, and sent me on my way. I continued home without any further problems.
Been told twice when filling the DEF it will trigger a system check, best thing to do if you keep getting a DEF warning when filling is not to fill it up. This has occurred after filling twice after a few miles. The first warning I got no CEL ,and no stored message. It appeared on the screen just long enough to read. The two events were 8 months apart, and both after filling the DEF.
You are right I do sound a bit sour, but will I gain anything changing trucks, my last one was 16 years of trouble free use. I was spoiled . This one six headed to seven recalls. A DEF issue, which I HOPE will not develop into a breakdown out on a freeway towing a fifth wheel. Other then that its a great towing machine, that I have been happy with, but I don't have my head buried in the sand as some with their rosy picture.
Thanks for the reply and details. I did a bunch of searching on different forums and although there is the odd person having issues related to the emissions control system there certainly didn't appear to be any patterns. Do you have any links to this upcoming recall? I guess I'll just wait and see what comes up.
I stated a thread called Ram Recall, I posted the link, and just replied to it so it may still be on the first page of Tow Vehicles, explains a bit of it.
Not sure what a pattern to you is, but a recall pretty much explains that.
I wish you all the luck, and you may be able to make an argument at 100K that you have had no emission issues. I can't make that claim I barely reached 20K
