Keep in mind that, in 1981, all VINs for all vehicles of any kind were standardized to the current 17 character system. Prior to 1981, the VIN may or may not have had any meaning; some manufacturers had an internal system, others used, literally, just a series of numbers and perhaps letters. The suggestions above are good; there may or may not be information on that trailer.
