Of course the 3/4 ton is going to handle the weight better...as they are designed to handle more weight.
The right half ton is more than up to the task of pulling your trailer...Silverado/GMC with the NHT or the F150 with the Max Tow/Max Payload package.
If you are willing to put the $$ into rear suspension enhancements on a normalhalf ton (air bags-$200-500 ish depending on how fancy you go) and LT tires ($600-1200 ish) than you would have a solid towing truck... I would do those enhancements before I bought a fancy hitch.
The thing about Half Tons is that they have pretty refined motors and transmissions and comfy rides. But the tires can be squishy. No fancy hitch is going to keep squirmy tires from being squirmy...
The thing about 3/4 tons is that in many cases the footprint is nearly the same as a 1/2 ton.... Especially if you are talking GM or Ram.
Speaking of Ram.... The 6.4 is a fantastic motor...available in a 2500..with coil spring suspension...and active fuel management. It's awesome.
But my vote... 2500 Diesel. I know you said gas... But I am seeing some fantastic prices on diesels... And the first time you hitch up your 3/4 ton diesel to your trailer you are going to grin from ear to ear. In your shoes...I would seriously consider bumping down a trim level and consider the diesel.
Thanks!
