Not quite sure I agree here.
Driving over a bump or pot hole if the were no unsprung weight the only resistance to the tire/rim/axle movement is the spring tension and damping factor of the shocks. (and quite possibly a anti-sway bar if installed)
I'd think that the addition of unsprung weight would ADD resistance to the suspension (making it stiffer) rather than softening it up.
If the owner/user also increased the diameter of their tires when switching to 19.5 rims (I sure did) the larger diameter will soften up both bumps and pot holes.
