1964 GMC Open Road truck camper

Hi all! New here! In my deep dive searches for more information on our (new to us) truck camper, I stumbled upon this forum. I can't find the original thread that lured me in, but I am confident that either someone here will be able to help, and/or we are going to meet some really cool people here! :)

I am looking for guidance on how to find more information on our truck camper. I searched the VIN # and even paid bumper . com to return zero results. What I DO know is it’s a 1964 GMC C10 (I know it has a Chevy hood - that was a replacement added by someone else) .. I think these were called Open Roads and came as “imperial” or “royale” depending on if it had the back door that folds down into a porch. (This does not.) That’s about all I’ve got. The previous owner got it in a trade & had no interest in it, so unfortunately there was no info there. It was registered in Nebraska and has stickers on it that indicate it attended camper shows as recently as 2007. I believe the GMCs are fairly uncommon so there is not a lot out there.

She's in relatively good shape. Currently getting brakes done but does run! We camped in it several times since we brought it home. There have been leaks over the years that have damaged the paneling. We had hoped to keep it mostly original, but we did started tearing out paneling this past weekend thinking we could just replace the worst parts, but as we get into it, it looks like we'll be re-doing all the walls. We are thinking about starting a page or a TikTok account to share our journey in getting her on the road and (hopefully) to share our travel adventures by spring! Looking forward to "meeting" you all! Thanks for reading!

  • Welcome and cool rig!

For specs on the truck, look up GM Heritage Center. Should be able to get the full builders specs for that model year. And Deezos Garage has dealer brochures by year.
FWIW that truck is almost certainly not a C10 or c1000 as GMC called it. Looks like 8 lug wheels and likely has to be a 324 ton or heavier to have the gvw for the camper. Can’t tell if it’s duals but it’s probably either a c2500 (in GMC lingo) or a c30 (1 ton and I believe factory duals back then).
