To create your own "poor man's" caliper tool, simply take a thick wire coat hanger, cut it shorter, make a large "C" shape with its shorter length, and slip over the axle tube. Make the gap within its open "C" shape to slide over the round axle shape. For example: - Click Here -
With properly size "C" shape, simply take its shape and overlay on top of tape measure. Is this opening 2 1/2" or 3" ??? If wondering, this is diameter of axle tube.
