The 7.3L is a good motor but not very powerful compared to modern offerings. Also, the 4R100 transmission wasn't the best match for it (it works a lot better behind the V10).
The 6.0 PSD made more power and is paired to an excellent transmission with closer ratios. But, plan on spending $5-8k to make really reliable.
I disagree on the 4R100, it was not match that was the problem , it was the cooling, I have had a 6.0 transmission cooler on my early 99 for the past 8 years, every since I started towing 10-13K fifth wheels , no problem with the transmission, but it has never been overheated, heat killed a lot of 4R100 's.
Root cause of the excess heat is a torque converter stall speed that is too high for that motor, combined with a lockup strategy that kept it unlocked too much. The same transmission behind the V10, which makes more HP, does not have the same heat problem. (missing cooler aside.... those trucks missing the extra cooler ran hot no matter what).
I agree on the torque converter, but not a problem if you get the right tuner to get it locked up in the lower gears . Well sure they ran hot without proper cooling, is that not what I said in my previous post , unless you are saying they ran hot empty, and all I can say to that is bull. Never had a problem towing light or empty, and I have had a transmission gauge from the time I started with the Superchip, and towing, later going to the DP tuner. I have ran a 7.3 Superduty nearly as long as anyone, they were available for a few months before I got mine. Over 15 years, and not a single problem with overheating. I still maintain that overheating was ,and is inadequate cooling system, keep that transmission cool ,and it performs well .
