1999 F250

brother bought a 1999 F250 last year.
hasn't used it much, but is replacing his dodge v10.
pulls a 28ft 5er
last trip out, said he has a lot of porposing???
he thinks he needs new shocks.
any input.

also first diesel 7.3. he wants to take it in for a full service. brake check, oil and filters, what do you recommend.

last he says sometimes when he comes to a stop, engine will die, but starts right back up ?????
thanks in advanced
  • Ford has an additive for the radiator coolant, be sure to use it.
  • Ditto on the cam position sensor. There is a recall and Ford will replace it for free. I keep a spare in the glove box.

Change the fuel filter every other oil change. Oil changes at 7500 miles, it holds 4 gallons. I use Motorcraft filters. I also keep a spare filter behind the back seat just in case I get bad fuel, has not happened but I stay ready.

Shocks, I got from NAPA, probably not as good as the originals.

Brake pads, I got 120,000 miles out of the originals on the front, replaced with Motorcraft from Ford dealer and still on the second set.

It would probably help to give it a treatment of Diesel Kleen fuel additive right after the filter change. That may help with shutting off, can't hurt.

The engine oil actually fires the injectors, I know mine has more power immediately after an oil change. I use Rotella.

Do not turn up the power too much, the 7.3 can make plenty but the 4R100 transmission is not able to handle much over stock. Do change the fluid and filter, do not flush. Mine has a drain plug on the transmission pan.
  • they recalled the 7.3's to replace the cam sensor.

If that has not been done the cam position sensor is a good bet on the staling.

I kept a spare in the glove box on mine.
  • When the engine dies it could be the cam sensor. Also don't skip on servicing the transmission and perhaps the rear differential. We only use Motorcraft filters on our 7.3's. Also the oil coolers can start leaking with old age so get that checked out. They can be rebuilt.
  • Make sure he understands this article. Check out videos on this subject so you know what's going on.

And if he gets a little fuel leak around center of the "valley" fix it right away. Don't wait thinking its only a little leak. Fuel leaking down into starter costs more than what they should IMO

:)Don't blame someone getting rid of Dodge gasser. But remember Fords comes with the problem circled. :):)
  • If he doesn't know the history of the truck, I would do all fluids and filters. Then he knows it is all fresh and ready. Then start tracking miles from there.

There are a lot of websites for info. Ford Truck Enthusiasts is one I use.

Dieing when pull up to a stop, possible torque converter not unlocking.
  • truck has always had regular maintenance
when he hears the price the shop will charge, I think he will as us to do it.

    best shocks would be ?????
  • New shocks are probably a good idea, perhaps some airbags too to help carry the load.

Oil and fuel filters should be pretty easy to DIY. Most places have a crazy markup for diesel oil changes. Fuel filters are easy to change as well.

Coolant, brake fluid, axle fluids, differential fluids should be changed too. Any idea about the maintenance history of the transmission? There are differing theories about transmission service... some people are afraid to change fluids on higher mileage transmissions. The "weak link" of that truck is the transmission. Stay on top of maintenance and consider beefing it up.

Truck shutting off, not a clue.
