You pull into commercial weigh stations when using a larger vehicle for commercial applications. There's probably an exception to this someplace, but this covers 99% of the use of a large vehicle. Here, I run my tractor with an 50 ton lowboy behind it to haul my private hunting trackrigs. Because there's nothing commercial about it, I don't need a CDL and I don't need to pull into DOT scales. I do need to obey weight limits, but that's it.
If all of the daily driver 1 ton trucks had to pull into the weight scales, they'd be busy building a lot of new scale houses. There is nothing special about a 3500 SRW truck, it's just a truck with a little more capacity than a 2500.
