I just traded in my 1/2 ton pickup for a 3/4 ton and was forced to register with commercial plates. In NY you can register a 1/2 ton with passenger plates without a problem, but 3/4 & 1 tons are heavier with unladen weights greater than 5500 pounds, so they must be registered with commercial plates.
Commercial plates come with many restrictions in NY, so I'm in the process of converting to passenger class. That means I need to put a permanent cap on the bed and permanently mount camping equipment in the bed. Got a cap and now I'm in the process of mounting a $20 single burner propane stove in the bed area. Once the stove is mounted, I need to take pictures and go to DMV to swap out the commercial plates for passenger plates. Of course there is always money involved for the DMV.
