It really all depends on the state. For instance, in Texas (per the TxDPS regulation) if you are pulling a trailer that weighs more than 10K you would need a Class A (not a standard Class C) license. If the trailer is less than 10K then one would require a Class B license.
TxDPS Licensing
Many folks do not meet this requirement and many may not even know it exists. So I would definitely ensure you call your local Department of Motor Vehicle (or equivalent) to ensure you meet the licensing standards.
Tom, I didn't say a CDL. In Texas a Class A license is not a CDL. Texas has a CDL and a non-commercial license for the large vehicles. If you read the info on the link provided it distinguishes the difference.
And with the reciprocity agreements Texas would not require you to have a Class A unless you had a Texas DL.
