2000 Ford Expedition Eddie bauer, 5.4L, 4x4, tow rating?

Hey y'all!

I bought another TT yesterday after a 3-4 year hiatus. My boys are a little older now and the perfect age to get them out camping again.

I have a few questions on my tow vehicle, a 2000 Ford expedition Eddie Bauer, 5.4L, 4x4 with the 17" wheels.

I recall from being a member here for several years, there is a extensive listing out there with vehicle tow ratings. Does anyone have a link to that?

Also, Did ford Make Trailer Tow mirrors for the F-150 in 2000 and would those mount up to my Expedition? I believe the Expedition is pretty identical to the F-150 in terms of chassis and body, at least from the front doors forward.

My TT is a 1989 Layton 23' ball to bumper with rear bunks. GVW is 6000, on the trip home the X didn't seem to mind the weight too much.

Any help would be appreciated, I am aware of CIPA and McKesh mirrors, but was hoping for a factory OEM extendable tow mirror.

Thanks,
Greg

  • thanks for all the great info guys, I appreciate it. I like the look of those mirrors mentioned on etrailer (i forget the brand), if they will work with my integrated turn signals.

it's good to be back at a travel trailer again, of course I have a whole laundry list of things I need to do with it, but that's all part of growing a TT and getting another one.

Thanks for the replies and so noted on the Expy versus X description.

Looks like I have a 6900 lb tow rating so I should be OK with my 6000 GVW Layton. Even fully loaded (I don't carry water in the tanks) I shouldn't be anywhere near 6K, I believe the unladen weight is 3800, so I figured fully loaded I'll probably be between 4500-5K.

The issue I'm having with my tow mirrors situation is everyone I look at (including the CIPA style slip on, says "not for us with OEM mirrors with the factory intregated turn signal, which mine has. Does anyone make any that would work with my OEM mirrors or am I going to be out of luck? I have a pair of cheapo strap on onese I used yesterday, which are COMPLETLY useless.

    Thanks,
    Greg

Go back to CIPA, and look closely. I have their mirrors for my 150, and yes they are designed to let the intergrated turn signals show thru. They had both the plain, and turn signal mirrors. About 65 buck a pair.

BTW, We towed our 6000lb 27' TT with a 02 EB Expe. It did a GREAT job. Plenty of power, and no sway. And our Tow cap was 6800LBS
  • I use these mirrors on my '04 Expy (attached from the top of the mirror, not the base). There is some slight vibration at highway speed, but nothing that makes viewing difficult. I was expecting a whole lot more, actually.

Been using them for 2 seasons now, still pleased with the view they provide.

  • I have been trying to find a decent mirror for my 09 Expy. Let me know if you find a good one.

Makesh mirrors are the best you can get.

Few hundred bucks, but they are well worth it from the reports on this forum.

    Thank!

I use these slip on TOW MIRRORs from CIPA purchased from AMAZON.

These slip over your standard mirrors and lock in place with a turn screw. No virbration and give a great rear view for me... You can select the exact fit for your model of truck.

    Your MY'00 Expy:

    Expedition 4WD 5.4 V-8 6,400 (b)
    Expedition 4WD 5.4 V-8 7,400 (c,g)
    Expedition 4WD 5.4 V-8 6,900 (c,h)

    (b) Requires 3.31:1 axle ratio.
    (c) Requires 3.55:1 axle ratio.
    (g) Requires 16-inch wheel option.
    (h) Requires 17-inch wheel option.

ps. typically 'X' = Excursion; 'Expy' = Expedition
