The Chevy engine and Alison auto. are both great. The Dodge automatic is not. The Dodge V10 is probably okay but will likely get worse fuel mileage.
The way I read the post you've driven a rental truck with an 8.1 but the 2004 Chevy in question is not that truck, right?
I wouldn't consider buying an ex rental truck unless it was practically free. I gather you're not looking to buy an ex rental truck so I'd vote for the Chevy. Sport45 wrote:

Both are good engines and either will do what you want. The "seat of the pants" difference in driving them will have more to do with the axle ratio than the engine.
I'd probably go with the Dodge even though my last experience with one wasn't good. But then, that was a '87.
Both of you are correct. I drove a rental with an 8.1 and was impressed with it. The Chevy I am looking at is not the rental. Sorry I was not clearer on that.
