The 48RE came out in about December 2002. The HO Cummins motors had it, and I am sure it was an option based on the build date of the V10.
That said, there is nothing wrong with either the 47RE or the 48RE. They got a bad rep when people bombed their engines, but held up fine at stock HP levels.
Both the 47 and 48 tranny's were junk even at stock levels.
I would go with the Chevy with the Allison any day over a Chrysler produced tranny.
I am SHOCKED that you would make such a statement troller. You always have such great things to say about Chrysler products........
What, did your brother in law's cousins' next door neighbor have problems with these as well?
I had a 47RE in my 2001 Ram 2500. While I only had it for two years, I never had problems with it as I left my truck stock. It was known to not be able to handle the additional HP and torque of tuners, and that is when it would cause problems.
Check out some of the competition forums where they do the tractor pulls. The 48RE is often higher regarded than the Allison.
I don't care what aftermarket goodies are required to make a band adjusting trany turd tolerable.
Stock to stock I would take the Allison tranny truck any day all day!
