I got mine (in SIG) in 2005 with 160K. Now has 211K. The older one has the P-pump which I hear is desirable for making more power and is supposedly not as susceptible to lift pump failure (if they even have one on that year). The 04 is common rail and is quieter. The 04 will have better brakes than the 98. In all likelihood the engine will outlast the rest of the truck. TDR and Cumminsforum are great resources. There are others too.
