The PAC-Brake isn't a necessity, it's a nice to have, but your truck's 160k miles is proof it really isn't required.

I'm sorry, but I took it as, if the exh brake wasn't needed full time rving for 14 years and 160k, then it may not be necessary now.
To the OP, yes in general, it's not a necessity, as you're already aware, however it is one of the nicest luxuries for towing that you can add to a diesel. Enough so that all newer diesel pickups have generally have an exhaust brake as standard equipment.
If the price is steep, look at BD brakes. I've had a BD exhaust brake for about 60k miles now and it was not necessary for the weights I tow or haul, but it sure is nice.
