2006 Dmax Performance

Being new owner of my first diesel I am a little disappointed at the performance of my 2006 Duramax 6.6L. Power it has, but fuel mileage is less then what I expected. I am getting only about 11 mpg in town. I am not a aggressive driver and work only 3 miles from work. Truck doesn't get warmed up before I get to work. Haven't taken it on a trip yet, so I do not know the Highway mileage. I have looked on the internet for help, but all I see is someone trying to sell me something. My question is what can I do to increase my fuel mileage keeping in mind I live in California. The truck was originally for Texas.

Thanks

  • 3 mile trips back and forth to work are not going to get good mileage in a Prius. It's a 7500# truck. 11mpg is good for the conditions your describe. Take it out on the highway and drive it and you'll see good mileage. I drove that exact truck for 125k miles in all kinds of conditions with and w/o trailers. Short trips in the city 11 sounds about right. Highway keeping your foot out of it you can get in the upper teens or even 20 if it's flat, no wind and you keep it at 55. Mixed hwy/city driving moderate I got around 15 for many many miles. Short trips and starts/stops kill mpg with any vehicle but it's especially hard on big trucks. It's not easy moving 4 tons from a dead stop.
  • I drive for five miles before mine even attempts to shift into high gear. On the highway I can get in the high teens driving at a pretty high speed after a while.
